Paralympic champion Dory Selinger killed by driver in Texas

Some very sad news from Texas.

On Thursday, Dory Selinger, a former Paralympic cyclist, died following a collision involving a driver in McKinney, Texas.

Officers with the McKinney Police Department responded Thursday morning to a collision near Alma Drive and State Highway 121. A cyclist was found at the scene and pronounced dead. Police said the driver remained at the site and that the incident was not considered a hit-and-run. Further details have not yet been released and the investigation is onging.

Multiple medallist at the Paralympics

Family and friends later identified the rider as Dory Selinger, 54.

He won gold at the 1996 Summer Paralympics in Atlanta. Then, Selinger added a silver and two bronze medals at the 2000 Summer Paralympics. He also claimed two world titles, in 1998 and 2002.

Collision in 1993

Selinger’s path in the sport followed a life-altering incident in 1993. Selinger and seven other cyclists were struck by a driver who was apparently experiencing a psychotic episode. His right leg became trapped in the wheel well of the car. It left him in a coma for seven days and resulted in a below-the-knee amputation. He also suffered a head injury that affected his speech and memory. His friend Vladimir Quinn was killed in the incident. After a long recovery, he made the decision to compete as a paracyclist.

According to local reports cited by Yahoo Sports, Selinger’s wife said she was alerted by his tracking device early Thursday morning and rushed to the scene. He also leaves behind two children.

The entire staff of Canadian Cycling Magazine extends deep condolences to Selinger’s friends and family after this terrible tragedy.

A Gofundme account has been created to help his family.
