Authorities have identified a Connecticut man who was killed after being struck by a police officer driving an unmarked vehicle while riding his bicycle this week.
Manuel Bonilla-Gomez, a Norwalk, Conn. resident, was cycling in town around 6 p.m. when the incident occurred, according to officials.
Paramedics quickly transported Bonilla-Gomez to Norwalk Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Investigators from the Norwalk Police Department reported that Bonilla-Gomez was heading south on Clinton Avenue when he allegedly crossed Connecticut Avenue at a red light. Meanwhile, a police vehicle, driven by Detective Andrew Roncinske, was passing through the intersection on a green light when it collided with Bonilla-Gomez’s bicycle. Roncinske, a police officer for 10 years, was responding to an emergency call at the time of the collision.
As per department protocol, Roncinske has been placed on administrative leave while the incident is under investigation, police officials confirmed.
“I ask that we all keep the family of Manuel Bonilla-Gomez, Detective Roncinske, and all those affected by this tragic accident in our thoughts and prayers during these most difficult times,” Norwalk Police Chief James Walsh said in a statement.
