Ride in paradise: The Fids passes away at 55

The BMX community lost a true original with the passing of Mark “The Fids” Findlay on December 8, 2024. Known simply as the Fids, he was more than a rider; he was a true punk rock icon in the world of BMX. From his early days in the U.K. scene to becoming a globally recognized rider, Fids carved his own path in BMX, embodying an unapologetic, joyful spirit that inspired countless riders.

A legacy of authenticity

Fids was BMX in its purest form. Whether it was the iconic yellow S&M bike, his signature laugh, or his 360s, he approached riding—and life—with authenticity and unfiltered joy. His no-handers and nothings often included two middle-fingers outstretched and are the reason many of the tributes out there end with, “fuck you Fids.” It is an expression of love and respect from the BMX community. Over a 30-year career as S&M Bikes’ longest-sponsored rider, he traveled the world, built ramps, mentored young riders and made every moment count.

“He lived life his way with no fucks given,” said Source BMX, summing up the spirit that made Fids unforgettable.

Honoring a legend

Just before his passing, Fids was awarded the NORA Cup Legend Award, a testament to his lasting impact. The words from the award capture his legacy perfectly:

“For many, Fids is pure BMX—the embodiment of the ‘do what you want, when you want’ attitude… A true original that continues to push and defy logic.”

A life to celebrate

Fids’ influence stretched far beyond tricks or trophies. He was a builder, a teacher and a friend who left an indelible mark on BMX culture. His humor, kindness and passion for the sport will live on in the memories of those he inspired.

Fuck you, Fids. Ride in Paradise.
