Shimano makes Saint pedals modular, rebuildable

Shimano makes Saint pedals modular, rebuildable

Shimano isn’t normally known for being particularly risky with its flat pedal design. Saint and XT are always reliable, perfectly good options. The new Saint pedals, though, offer a far more interesting design. Shimano’s opted for a modular pedal design, with a placeable composite skid-plate, to make these a pair of flats that will last the harshest riding.

Saint PG-G8040 gets modular

The new Shimano Saint flat pedals (Officially Saint PG-G8040 in Shimano’s always-riveting nomenclature) use a dual concave platform, designed to increase grip. There’s up to 14 pins per side, providing hefty grip for those of you still flat-pedal DHing, and adjustable grip for those of us who don’t need to feel quite so glued to our pedals. There’s also an interesting cut-out design near the axle intended to keep a more consistent pedal height where the axle meets the crank arm, so you have more options to position your foot comfortably on the pedal.

The real feature is that the Saint’s are very rebuildable. Right down to the composite skid plate and replaceable pins. Those serve as a protective shell around the reinforced alloy pedal body. Shimano also offers replacement axles, pins and other parts to keep the pedals running smooth no matter how many times you replace the skid plate.
