Victoria moves to expand section of protected bike lanes

Alberta government reacts to Ontario bike lane debacle: ‘We’re watching’

Cyclists navigating the corridor between Shelbourne and Pandora could soon see a safer, more connected ride. Pandora Avenue already features protected bike lanes from Store to Cook streets, but a new motion by Couns. Matt Dell and Dave Thompson propose extending the network further east, according to ChekNews.

“What happens in practice is folks are riding up Pandora’s two-way bike lanes, when you get to Cook Street, the two-way bike lanes end,” Dell said, as reported by ChekNews. Dell says as it stands now, there is a risky transition onto the four-lane Cook Street. “It’s one of the most dangerous intersections there for folks heading east. Unless you’re a competent rider, you shouldn’t be doing it.”

The unanimously approved motion aims to link Pandora’s lanes to Shelbourne via Begbie, creating part of the city’s All Ages and Abilities cycling network AAA). Thompson emphasized the goal of providing a safe route for seniors, parents, and newcomers to biking. “I don’t want cyclists mixing in with traffic. It complicates things and increases risks for everyone,” he said.
