Jonas Vingegaard heads into Tuesday’s Giro d’Italia time trial in a commanding position, but much of the pre-stage chatter has centred on something unexpected: his skinsuit.
The Visma – Lease a Bike rider sits second overall behind Afonso Eulálio after a dominant opening week that included two stage wins. While the Portuguese rider continues to wear pink, Vingegaard will start the 42-km Tuscany test in the blue mountains jersey after taking over the climbers’ classification.
New kit day
“That was not as we had anticipated. We overlooked that a bit,” teammate and vlogger extraordinaire Victor Campenaerts told Sporza, referring to the aerodynamic compromises of racing in an organizer-supplied skinsuit made by Castelli, as opposed to the squad’s super dialled in Nimbl kit.
Campenaerts added that Vingegaard himself was relaxed about the situation. “Jonas says: ‘I rode my best time trials in a leader’s jersey.’”
And he ain’t wrong. The Dane has produced devastating Tour de France time trials while wearing yellow. Remember the time he went so fast he thought his power meter was busted? (Oh, what a feeling that would be for us, dear readers.)
As far as the others, champion Filippo Ganna is the clear favourite for the stage dub and one of the first major names to start. It might also be a good day for national road champ Derek Gee-West starts at 9:52 a.m. EDT.
He’s a multiple national TT champ, as well as former track star and could make lots of time back on the super fast course. Although lately, now that he’s become a lighter GC guy, he says he likes hillier courses. Still, today could be a good day for him to continue to move up the standings.
TTs are never super-exciting, but given the length of Tuesday’s, it might be a banger. Big gaps are expected. Coverage begins at 7:05 a.m. EDT on FloBikes.com. Canadian Cycling Magazine will have a full run-down after, too.
