Rudy Molard (Groupama-FDJ) took over the overall lead in the Vuelta a España after a fourth place finish on stage five into Bilbao.
The Frenchman was part of a large breakaway group that were in front for the majority of the stage won by Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates). Soler ended a two-year drought for Spain with his stage victory. Prior to the stage the last Spanish Grand Tour stage victory was in 2020.
Yesterday’s stage winner Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma) finished nearly five minutes behind Soler in the main field, meaning he will hand the red jersey of the overall leader over to the Groupama-FDJ rider.
British rider Fred Wright (Bahrain-Victorious) continues to demonstrate his great form in the current season and sits second overall, just two seconds behind Mollard, Roglič is now fifth overall at 4-09.
Victor Langelloti (Burgos-BH) takes over the king of the mountains jersey with a total score of 13 points. Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) still leads the points competition with 127 points and Wright is now the best young rider.
