Why the women’s Tour Down Under is particularly important for 3 Canadians

It’s road season again! Canadians Sarah van Dam, Adele Normand and Mara Roldan will all debut for their new teams at the WorldTour Santos Tour Down Under starting Friday. Simone Boilard makes for a quartet of Canucks racing in Australia.

The three-stage Santos Tour Down Under runs from January 17-19.

Van Dam has joined German WorldTeam CERATIZIT-WNT Pro Cycling Team after two years with American Continental outfit DNA Pro Cycling. Better known for her consistent track cycling, van Dam took the scratch race in the UCI Champions League round in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands.

Mara Roldan moved over to Dutch WorldTeam Picnic-PostNL from another American Continental team Cynisca Cycling. In 2024 Roldan was third overall in the five-stage Redlands Classic.

Adele Normand will be donning the orange and green kit of French ProTeam St Michel-Preference Home-Auber93 from Spanish Continental squad Eneicat–CMTeam. Last season Normand raced only two days outside of Spain.

Boilard is in her second year with WorldTeam Uno-X. She was 48th in the last year’s Tour de France Femmes, having started the season by placing fifth in Spain’s inaugural Trofeo Felanitx-Colònia de Sant Jordi.

Boilard at the business end of the peloton with 12 km to race in the 2024 Gent-Wevelgem.

Current Tour Down Under champion Sarah Gigante is fighting endofibrosis and won’t defend. Last year’s third-place Neve Bradbury and fourth-place Amanda Spratt return and must be considered among the favourites.
