Wiebes does it again at Vuelta a Burgos

Wiebes does it again at Vuelta a Burgos

Another day, another dub for Dutch star Lorena Wiebes. She continued her winning run at the Vuelta a Burgos Féminas on Friday, taking Stage 2.

Once again, she used her ferocious sprint to win in Spain.

The 122-km stage from Castrojeriz looked destined for a sprint from the start. There wasn’t that much in the way of climbs.

A day for the fastwomen

Plus, the big teams made sure that early break got caught up just before the last few kilometres. Elena De Laurentiis, Stine Snortheim and Marta Pavesi stayed clear for much of the afternoon but were ultimately reeled in by the teams that wanted a big ole bunch sprint.

Not everyone wanted that though. A few women tried to sneak away and outsmart the sprinter’s teams.
Sara Martín attacked, and was caught. Then, a dangerous move featuring Mie Ottestad and Silke Smulders briefly threatened to stay away.

But the peloton brought everything back together before the line.

As always, Team SD Worx – Protime’s Mischa Bredewold delivered the perfect lead-out for Wiebes. She smoked Ally Wollaston and Elisa Balsamo to take her second victory in as many days.

Saturday’s penultimate stage is from Busto de Bureba to Medina de Pomar for a total of 126km. It’s a bit lumpier than today, but has a relatively flat finish. A day for a break? Or will Team SD Worx – Protime just keep doing what they do: win.

Kiara Lylyk (Mayenne-Monbana-Mypie) had another solid ride, finishing 22nd and top Canuck. National champ Alison Jackson (St Michel-Preference Home-Auber 93) was 57th, Nadia Gontova (Liv AlUla Jayco) was 70th, and Clara Emond (St Michel-Preference Home-Auber 93) was 87th.
