Derek Gee-West crashes in Giro, race continues after massive pile-up

UPDATED: Gee-West caught back on but then went slightly off the back on the Monastery Pass

Some rain has caused treacherous conditions at the second stage of the Giro d’Italia. The rain picked up on the way to the Red Bull Kilometre and the Lyaskovets Monastery Pass. A massive crash created havoc with 23 km remaining. Osgoode, Ont.’s Derek Gee-West was caught up in it but has managed to get back on his bike and has caught back on after chase.

The race was not officially neutralized, although Jonas Vingegaard and his Visma teammates had already gone to the front to slow things down. Several riders have been sent to hospital, including Jay Vine. It also appears that the entire UAE team, save for Dane Mikkel Bjerg has gone down.

Other riders are being checked for concussions. Race radio says that the pace of the pack is now at a “regulated” pace.
